Dig Out From the Farm Spreadsheet Pile
Five years ago, Steve Dewey of Tim Dewey Farms, relied on spreadsheets to manage farm data, such as tracking accounting, crop insurance, fertilizer, seed, and other operational tasks.
“It was like spreadsheets were growing out of spreadsheets,” Steve said. “We needed to get better organized.”
Finding a Better Way to Manage Farm Data
In the search for a solution to their spreadsheet woes, Tim Dewey Farms, located in Kansas, started using Granular Business. The real-time farm data helped Steve organize all their business needs into a single, easy-to-understand format. They specifically use crop plans, work orders, and the mobile app to pinpoint input inventory usage on their fields, where they grow Pioneer corn, soybeans, sorghum, alfalfa, cotton, wheat and triticale.
“Granular allowed us to focus and narrow down where the profitability is,” Steve said. “We’re not digging in piles of spreadsheets and entering information when we have time or at the end of the year to try to better understand the details of our profitability.”
Understanding John Deere Tractor Data
Steve keeps tight tabs on how fields are producing, what input treatments they received, and the effectiveness of those applications. He utilizes Granular Insights and Granular Business to connect with John Deere equipment to take real-time farm data from the field to the office. In turn, he can better quantify how their daily work impacts profits.
“My grandfather farmed this land, and my father is still farming with us. We all have a gut feeling about some ground producing better than others,” Steve said. “But this takes the ‘gut’ right out of it. We’ve got real-time data that tells us what’s happening, allowing us to make adjustments in season and plan better for the next.”

Simple Profit Analysis at Harvest
Granular Business guides Tim Dewey Farms all through the year, but is especially helpful at the end of the growing season. Steve uses it to sort farm data down to each field, analyze and plan for business expenses such as rent payments, interest, land payments, equipment expenses, fertilizer chemicals, and seed.
“Everything is in one place, broken down for you in black and white,” Steve said.
Easy-to-use Software for All Farm Team Members
Steve wanted a more efficient way to assign work orders on the farm. Initially, he was worried about the idea of his truck drivers, many of whom are older adults, embracing digital work orders. He thought maybe they would be reluctant to adopt the new technology because it requires recording farm data on a smartphone or tablet.
He received a pleasant surprise when his drivers embraced work orders in Granular Business.
“It gives our drivers more ownership of their work and investment in the farm’s success,” Steve said. “I’ve got 65- and 70-year-old truckers who are begging to fill out logs. I would have never guessed it.”
Share Farm Data and Production Analysis with Anyone
Granular impresses Steve so much he recommends it to his fellow farmers and others he has business dealings with. “If somebody asks me about Granular, I say come down to my operation for a couple of hours and I’ll show you what we do here,” Steve said. “That’s the best sales pitch I can give.”
